Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ & Fuel Saving Tips

Where does the fuel price data come from?

All data comes from the UK Government's official Fuel Finder service. Retailers report their prices regularly, and we display the latest available data for Scottish locations.

How often are prices updated?

Prices are updated by fuel retailers at varying frequencies, typically daily or when prices change. FuelFinder Scotland fetches the latest data from the government API approximately once per hour.

What's the difference between "Cheapest Price" and "Best Value"?

Cheapest Price shows the absolute lowest price per litre, regardless of distance.

Best Value factors in the cost of driving to the station (fuel, time, wear and tear). Sometimes a slightly more expensive station closer to you offers better overall value.

Can I change the search distance?

Yes! When viewing results for a location, use the search distance selector to choose 5, 10, or 25 miles. Different locations have different default search distances based on their size and isolation.

Why doesn't my local station appear?

FuelFinder Scotland shows only stations that report their prices to the UK Government's Fuel Finder service. Not all retailers participate in the scheme. If your local station is missing, they may not be reporting their prices.

Are the prices guaranteed to be accurate?

No. Prices can change at any time, and there may be delays between when retailers update their prices and when they appear on FuelFinder Scotland. Always verify prices before filling up.

How can I save money on fuel?

  • Check FuelFinder before long trips to find the cheapest stops along your route
  • Don't drive out of your way for cheap fuel - use the "Best Value" recommendation
  • Fill up when prices are low rather than waiting until empty
  • Use supermarket fuel loyalty cards and cashback credit cards for extra savings
  • Drive smoothly and avoid harsh acceleration to improve fuel efficiency

Can I bookmark my favorite location?

Yes! When viewing results for a location, click the "Bookmark This Page" button or press Ctrl+D (Cmd+D on Mac) to save it to your browser bookmarks. The URL includes your selected location, fuel type, and search distance.

Is FuelFinder Scotland free?

Yes, completely free with no subscriptions required. We provide this service to help Scottish drivers save money on fuel.

Who runs FuelFinder Scotland?

FuelFinder Scotland is an independent service built using publicly available UK Government data. We are not affiliated with any government body or fuel retailer.
